Reference: arguably the biggest main character to lack a proper history
Setting: The Slayers universe is a magic-rich, D&D style world -- set in a fantasy style setting with limited technology. Beastmen? Got 'em. Trolls? Got 'em. Orcs? Got 'em. Pretty much any sort of fantasy-style creature exists in this universe, including and not limited to dragons. There are inns, small towns, kings and queens (and ugly princes who shouldn't have the right to be called princes) -- plenty of forest paths and caves to explore. And oh? Did I mention magic?
Getting into a little more detailed history: the all-powerful, all-mighty being in Slayers is the Lord of Nightmares. He rules over four parallel dimensions. The four universes exist almost stacked on top of each other -- parallel but not really touching. The world of Slayers seems to take place on the top most tier and each of these universes has a God and a Demon Lord. The God is there to protect the world while the Demon Lord aims to destroy it. (Cliche, right?) In this main universe that the series is set in, these entities are Flare Dragon Ceiphied and Ruby Eye Shabranigdu respectively. A battle waged on between them and ended in both entities being sealed off in some form or another, not destroyed. So during the first series, Lina and friends encounter Shabranigdu who had been locked in Red Priest Rezo's eyes since his birth, rendering him blind whereas Ceiphied split himself into four separate parts to defend against Shabranigdu. Complicated? Yes. I don't really get it either, but that's why I'm apping Gourry. :P
Personality: Gourry is an idiot. Seriously. This is probably his biggest and most defining trait.
